Personal Interests

Dr. Kunz’s main activities outside the practice of medicine are loving his wife and four (grown and mostly grown) children, soaking up as much wisdom as he can from his pastor, church fellows, and personal study, becoming a total bicycle fanatic (with swimming and gym-rat activities thrown in), writing, and making a little music with guitar and voice.

Biography

Dr. David W. Kunz received a BA degree in Religion from Wake Forest University, captained the Varsity Swimming Team, graduated Magna cum Laude, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Mortar Board. He was selected by his peers as one of three Senior Orators, to speak at commencement activities. After graduating from Emory University School of Medicine in 1982, he completed a Family Practice Residency at the Naval Regional Medical Center in Charleston, S.C. He became a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine in 1985 and maintains his Board Certification to the present time. Attaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the Medical Corps, he served on the Family Practice Staff at Naval Hospital, Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station and was Director of Utilization and Quality Assurance. He has training in Advanced Trauma Life Support, and has served as an Advanced Cardiac Life Support Instructor Trainer.

Since leaving the Navy and returning to Atlanta in 1987, Dr. Kunz has been on the staff of Gwinnett Hospital System, where he has served as Chief of Family Medicine, and as a member of the QA Committee and the Ethics Committee. He is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor of Family and Community Medicine at Mercer University School of Medicine. Dr. Kunz maintains his membership in the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians and also belongs to the Medical Association of Georgia, Southern Medical Association, Gwinnett/Forsyth Medical Society, and Christian Medical/Dental Association.

Dr. Kunz was one of the first physicians in the nation to recognize the importance of computerized medical information systems and specifically the security and economic implications of linking clinical and financial data. Perisseia Physicians, LLC, formed in 1998 as a management and physicians’ group model, was a pioneering attempt to leverage this connection. More recently, Dr. Kunz has created DOCSTER.com, a secure, physicians-only, communications platform (think ultra-secure “Facebook” for doctors, by doctors, with membership by invitation from member doctors only). The goal of this project is to create a “safe-haven” for doctors (and eventually, patients) who are concerned about rapidly expanding medical system regulations and with government and insurance company intrusion into the privacy of the doctor-patient relationship. Dr. Kunz networks, writes, and speaks widely on this topic. He’ll bend your ear on the topic if you give him the chance!

Dr. David W. Kunz has been practicing medicine for over thirty years.
